How to Layer Your Child's Outfits for Cold Weather
As we wave goodbye to warmer weather, it’s time to store your child's summer dresses and shorts away.
However, with the autumn and winter seasons comes plenty of opportunity for stylish and cosy outfits. Layering is key to keeping them comfortable throughout the day, no matter how the temperature changes.
Today, Village Kids is here to help you layer your children's outfits whilst keeping them fashionable and comfortable. It’s all about the small details!
Step 1: Start with Thermal Under-layers
Thermal under-layers are a must-have for autumn and winter.
These serve as the perfect base, adding an extra layer of warmth and comfort underneath your child’s clothes. They trap body heat and keep the air between the fabric and the skin insulated.
To prevent itching and discomfort, opt for soft and breathable fabrics, like cotton and wool blends. Thermal long-sleeved tops and leggings in neutral colours like grey, white, and black can be paired with any outfit.
Step 2: Add Socks and Tights
The feet are among the first places to get cold in the winter, so you should make sure your child is all wrapped up.
By pairing socks underneath a pair of tights, you can increase the protective layer against the cold so your child’s feet are kept warm all day long. Opt for thick, fluffy socks for extra comfort.
You could also put your child in two pairs of thin or thermal tights designed for cold weather. These go well with dressers and skirts.
Step 3: Middle Layer with Jumpers or Hoodies
The middle layer is where you can begin to build up your outfit.
Depending on the day ahead, you could opt for a chunky jumper or knitted sweater for a smart outfit or a cosy hoodie for casual and chilled activities.
For a more practical outfit, pair a chunky cardigan over a long-sleeved top or T-shirt. This extra layer can be removed if your child gets too hot during the day.
Step 4: Stylish Outerwear
The outerwear is the final touch, often adding the most protection against the cold winter chill.
The UK weather can be unpredictable during autumn, with sunny spells one minute and rain showers the next. A lightweight jacket that is both warm and waterproof is the perfect choice. This includes denim jackets, raincoats, and bomber jackets.
When winter starts to arrive, switch to quilted or padded coats. These provide excellent insulation against the cold and protect your child from harsh wind and rain. Look for fleece and fur linings for an extra touch of cosiness.
Step 5: Warm Accessories
The right accessories can add a stylish touch and additional protection for your child’s autumn and winter outfits.
A warm hat, such as a knitted beanie or woollen hat, is ideal. These come in a variety of fun designs and colours and keep your child’s head warm. A chunky scarf can protect the chest and neck from icy spells.
When choosing a scarf, opt for a design that compliments the hat and coat for a fashion-forward outfit. Cold hands can make outdoor play uncomfortable, so keep your child’s hands warm with gloves or mittens. Velcro straps will keep the gloves from falling off.
Step 6: Practical Footwear
Whether they’re running around in the park or heading to school, the right shoes or boots will keep their feet comfortable and dry.
Wellies are a classic choice for wet and muddy days. They keep your child protected from puddles and ensure their socks stay dry.
For a more fashionable look, opt for ankle boots with a sturdy rubber sole. Boots with fleece or faux fur linings are perfect for providing extra insulation.
